Diplomatic relations were established on 9 December 1930.
Afghanistan recognized the independent state of Lithuania de jure on 7 September 1991.
Diplomatic relations with Afghanistan were re-established on 31 March 2005.
From 2005 to 2006, Dainius Baublys served as the first Chargé d’Affaires a.i. and Head of the Special Mission of Lithuania to Afghanistan after the re-establishment of independence.
From 2008 to 2012, Ziauddin Mijadedi served as the first Ambassador of Afghanistan to Lithuania after the re-establishment of diplomatic relations (resided in Poland).
